NOAA HRRR forecast, 18 hour, virtual validation report

This dataset validation report plots a sample of values from the NOAA HRRR forecast, 18 hour, virtual dataset over time and across space, comparing where possible to a previously validated reference dataset. It also reports the quantity of unavailable values and their associated timestamps. These analyses are one layer of a multi-layered dataset validation process we perform at dynamical.org and also provide users a preview of the dataset contents.

Summary

This dataset has been reviewed and is ready for use. Two things to know before using the pre-2021 record: many fields change behavior at the HRRR version 3 → version 4 upgrade on 2020-12-02, and the hourly-maximum vertical velocity fields are unusable at forecast hour 1 before that date.

What looks good

Manifest integrity. Every suspected defect — wind shear, enhanced stretching potential, the radar maxima pair, baseflow, the vegetation trio, aerosol optical thickness, cloud base and top, the vertical-velocity maxima, canopy water — was fetched from the source GRIB and matched the archive bit-for-bit, missing-value placement included. No misassigned chunk references anywhere in the dataset.
Whole-archive gates. Manifest completeness was probed across all 70,652 forecast initializations, about 4.0 million expected source files, and the sampled decode check read 16,251 references with zero failures.
Geometry and coordinates. North is up, east is right, and the Lambert-Conformal extent is correct in all 176 spatial maps. The land-sea mask and vegetation-type fields resolve the Great Salt Lake, the five Great Lakes, Chesapeake and Delaware bays, the Florida peninsula and both gulfs, agreeing cell-for-cell with each other, and surface geopotential height spans −81 m in Death Valley to 3995 m in the Rockies.
Units and physical consistency. Potential temperature and relative humidity recompute from their inputs to within 0.1 K and about 1%, and the 525 mb heights, temperatures and vorticity match a July ridge. The convective available potential energy variants nest correctly by parcel layer, confirming the level labels are not swapped, and the three lightning fields satisfy the documented blend relationship to within 9%.
Expected behavior. Run-total precipitation is monotonically non-decreasing and closes against the hourly buckets, categorical fields are clean 0/1 masks with correct seasonality, source no-data markers on echo top and percent-frozen precipitation read as missing rather than leaking into the statistics, and reformatting introduced no banding, stuck values or spikes.

Review notes

HRRR version 3 → version 4 upgrade, 2020-12-02. Seventeen variables begin only at this date: aerosol optical thickness, column-integrated mass density, total-column cloud water and ice, boundary-layer cloud cover, 0–3 km convective available potential energy, several severe-weather diagnostics (effective-layer helicity, critical angle, enhanced stretching potential), surface hail diameter, the 261–256 K layer thickness, near-surface and model-level smoke concentration, and the vegetation-fraction and leaf-area-index fields. The upgrade also redefined the native model levels, so model-level pressure shows a one-time offset and model-level turbulent kinetic energy drops its floor from 5.0×10⁻⁴ to 5.0×10⁻⁵ J kg⁻¹.
The 10 and 80 metre wind components follow the model grid's axes, not east and north. The HRRR runs on a Lambert-conformal grid and its source files resolve the u and v components to that grid, so u is not eastward velocity and v is not northward velocity. They are equivalent to eastward and northward winds along the centre of the model's domain and become offset by up to 22.8 degrees at its eastern and western edges.
The hourly-maximum vertical velocity fields are unusable at lead 1 hour before 2020-12-02 12:00 UTC. Initialization noise leaves a spurious 2–3 m s⁻¹ floor at nearly every grid point: 98.6% and 94.1% of the domain above 1 m s⁻¹ for maximum upward and downward velocity, against 3.6% and 2.6% after the upgrade. Leads of 2 hours and longer are unaffected throughout the archive. The GRIB packing is byte-identical either side of the boundary, so this is what the field contains, not how it is encoded.
Smoke concentration units change at 2021-12-21 14:00 UTC. Near-surface and model-level smoke mass density is in micrograms per cubic metre before that cycle and kilograms per cubic metre after it, following a correction in the source encoding; multiply earlier values by 1×10⁻⁹ to compare across the change. An earlier version of this report gave the boundary as 18:00 UTC; the 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 UTC initializations are already in kilograms per cubic metre and must not be rescaled.
Aerosol tracers are a placeholder through the version-3 era. From 2019-06-13 through 2020-12-01 the water-friendly and ice-friendly aerosol number concentrations hold a nearly uniform climatological background, rather than the spatially varying, seasonally cycling field seen before mid-2019 and after the upgrade.
Later-starting variables. The two lightning-threat fields begin at the 2022-06-28 12:00 UTC cycle, because the same source slot previously carried a different quantity. Level-of-free-convection height begins around 2022-01-01 and ramps in, with roughly 4% of initializations missing until 2022-06-28.
Source data gaps. 183 of 70,652 initializations are missing one or more source files, 3,513 files in total, none recoverable from the upstream archive. Exact times are in unavailable_timestamps.txt; the main clusters are:
- 2018-07-13 → 2018-09-15 — 157 initializations, 3,245 files (pressure-level variables unaffected throughout)
- 2018-12-17 — 1 initialization, 7 files
- 2019-03-10 → 03-11 — 7 initializations, 122 files
- 2019-05-04 — 3 initializations, 53 files
- 2019-11-22 — 4 initializations, 23 files
- 2020-11-12 — 2 initializations, 20 files
- 2020-12-11 — 2 initializations, 29 files
- seven further single initializations between 2018-10 and 2026-06 — 14 files
